Senior Web Developer at Customink.com

Location: Washington, DC area
URL: www.customink.com

Role

Can you pick up new technologies rapidly? Do you read different tech-related blogs? Have you learned a new language in the last year? Are you always working on your own private coding project at home? If so we may be looking for you!

CustomInk.com is looking for a web developer to help build and expand our technology platform. This will include building new web-based applications for use by our customers and internal users as well as extending our existing applications. We are looking for an individual who has developed and deployed web-based applications and someone who has a passion for developing new experiences on the web.

You will work closely with our designers, Marketing team, other business teams, and other developers to understand the new applications and changes needed, and then build and deploy these ideas. Within the Software Engineering team, most of your work will use Ruby on Rails with a great deal of AJAX work. You will also help to make key changes to the sections of our site that are Java-based.

You will report to our Software Engineering team lead, and will be part of our small, fun, and fast-moving team.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for implementing new features on our public site, www.customink.com, as well as extending our internal web-based applications. Within this, you will need to:

  • Discuss new features with designers and other business teams, giving input on what is technically feasible.
  • Implement new features and applications. While writing new code, you will be responsible for ensuring we have a solid foundation for our HTML and CSS code, as well our server-side logic.
  • Resolve bugs found in different areas of code.
  • Determine project schedules and your own milestones. You will be responsible for scoping your work and hitting the deadlines you set.
  • Help with maintenance on existing systems as necessary.

You will also help drive our development practices forward. You will be expected to research new technologies and techniques to ensure we stay productive and are using the best practices available. We are open to experimentation, and look for someone who enjoys working in an ever-changing environment.

Qualifications

  • Attention to detail: We strive to give our visitors an outstanding experience, which means making sure we do a great job on the details of what they use.
  • Excellent HTML and CSS knowledge: All of our development is web-based, and we are looking for someone who is strong in these building blocks of the web.
  • Strong experience with Ruby or another dynamic language: All of our new development is in Ruby, and the right candidate will understand at least one dynamic language well.
  • Strong experience with JavaScript: We make heavy use of JavaScript through AJAX-based applications and expect you to help push that work forward.
  • Experience with Java, especially servlets and JSPs: While all of our new work is in Ruby, we continue to enhance our existing applications written in Java.
