Web Developer (Front End) at The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks a talented and passionate front end Web Developer with a strong background in XHTML, PHP, CSS, and JavaScript to join the New Media department. The Web Developer will contribute to the design group’s efforts to enhance the appeal of the organization’s online offerings. Successful candidates must be comfortable creating clean, functional and cross browser compatible templates in collaboration with a designer. The Chronicle of Higher Education and its sister publication, The Chronicle of Philanthropy are the leading sources for news, career searches and community discussion in higher education and philanthropy, respectively. The New Media department supports the Web design and maintenance of the company Web sites, most notably, www.chronicle.com and www.philanthropy.com. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in an open, collaborative, and deadline-driven environment.

Principle responsibilities include: developing and maintaining user interface features and templates for multiple platforms and browsers. The successful candidate will have several years of expertise hand-writing code; solid background with XHTML, CSS, DOM-based JavaScript, PHP templates, fully-tableless layouts, and semantic code; experience with Web standards, usability, and accessibility principles; familiarity with template-based CMS and subversion; knowledge of cross-browser issues and design sensibility. This person must be comfortable working with deadlines and be able to prioritize projects proficiently. He/She should also have the drive to create elegant design templates. The candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years experience with related technologies.
