We’re looking for best of class developers to help us create the best interactive experience for our readers. As Director of Engineering, you would be called upon to drive strategic technical decisions, as well as participate hands on writing code. You would be required to always wear multiple hats and utilize various skills- it’s a fast paced environment. You would also be responsible for leading a small team of developers, providing coherence around standards and process. Please note the “Submittal Requirements” below. Required Qualifications • Experience building on the WordPress platform • High proficiency with front- and back-end development- XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL • Experience working with servers and self-hosted Wordpress MU installations • Extensive project management experience with a proven track record of keeping projects on schedule and budget. • Experience contracting and managing workflow for out-of-house staff and/or vendors. • Ability to document scope and requirements, develop production schedules and budgets, and determine resource allocation. • Ability to implement workflow processes (such as ticketing and version control) that maximizes efficiency for the development team. • Clear demonstrable capability to drive strategic technical decisions and prioritize planning to accomplish strategic goals • Strong command of web standards, CSS-based design, cross-browser compatibility • Disciplined approach to testing and quality assurance • Knowledgeable foundation in interaction design principles • Great written communication and documentation abilities • Ability to assess issues critically and provide recommendations for solutions Additional Skills might include: • Using Google Analytics and other tracking tools • Experience with ad management (Google Ad Manager, etc) • Familiarity with social media tools and channels Responsibilities would include: • Drive strategic technical decisions • Manage small team of developers • Participate hands on with completing development projects • Working with Director of Product Management and business team to prioritize and plan projects according to strategic initiatives Experience: • 7+ years professional web development (including dynamic database driven sites – e-commerce experience a plus) and server management • Rapid prototyping of new products and features • Managing small team of developers and/or contract employees and/or short term consultants if necessary • Working closely with a team might change specifications in mid-project and delivering a finished product that exceeds their expectations. Submittal Requirements: • An detailed explanation describing the similarities and differences between Wordpress.com and Wordpress MU – as well as the pros and cons of each system • Provide at least five things in your areas of expertise (related to this job or not) that you feel most passionately about. • Five improvements to the GigaOM site that could each be implemented in a week or less.
