Happy Cog Philadelphia is seeking a Creative Director.

To be considered for this role, you’ll need to have spent a substantial amount of time in the trenches designing websites. Websites that are highly usable, accessible and aesthetically appropriate. This role isn’t ceremonial, or managerial in the ‘classic’ sense. It’s hands on, practice what you preach kind of stuff. You’ll be spending good amounts of time rolling up your sleeves and pushing pixels, so you have to be very comfortable in that world. If you can hold your own with the likes of Jason Santa Maria, Dan Cederholm, Cameron Moll, Doug Bowman or Khoi Vinh, well, that should give you an idea of the pedigree we are looking for.

You’ll be working with some of the most imaginative web designers and developers the industry has to offer. They don’t need a boss, so don’t worry about performance reviews or tracking their time. Our Creative Director will be someone who can dissect, interpret and articulate what our clients want, need, hate and love. Our Creative Director will work with our designers and developers to strategize and deploy a visual and interactive language that will speak to those needs effectively. The Creative Director for Happy Cog is what Brian Eno was to U2, the Talking Heads and David Bowie. Someone who shapes the vision and makes great work the greatest.

We don’t require advanced degrees in this-or-that, decades of business experience and the like. We do require someone who has something to show us (real URLs), has experience directing teams, and has passion for the craft. For Happy Cog, this stuff isn’t just a way to earn a paycheck. We live and breathe this stuff. We speak at conferences, we write, we teach. We are always creating. You need to be into this in a big way.

We’re a small firm, so we don’t offer relocation packages. The job is in Philadelphia, so if you’re in Miami and you’re the right person, you’ll need to to rent the U-Haul and get to Philly. If you’re already in Philly, even better. The job is full time. We have great benefits, and we have a great time together. We are just as comfortable hanging at the bar with each other after work as we are scratching our heads figuring stuff out at the conference table.
